We’ve completely rebuilt the “batch edit” mode in the Chart of Accounts. There was a limited early version of batch edit, but we think you’re really going to like the new one.
Putting the Chart of Accounts in Edit mode lets you make inline edits to the account name, number, type, and detail type. You can also quickly lock/unlock accounts, add accounts, and add subaccounts. If you’re outside the US, you can also edit default tax code.
Most importantly, you can also drag-and-drop accounts to create and edit hierarchies. Drag Account B under Account A to make B a subaccount of A. Or, if B is already a subaccount of A, drag it to the left to make it its own parent account.
Edit mode doesn’t change any existing validations in the Chart of Accounts. In particular, there are certain accounts that can’t be inactivated, and this won’t change that. You can’t mix account types in a hierarchy of parent and subaccounts, and this won’t change that either. But it will vastly speed up your work restructuring the COA to meet your needs.
The new Edit mode is available to everyone, today. Both accountants and clients can use it, because it offers functionality that clients already have access to. Edit mode’s only focus is making it faster for you to do the work you already do now. To access it, open the chart of accounts and choose Clean up —> Open chart of accounts in edit mode.
P.S. — if you like this, we think you’ll also like Chart of accounts cleanup! Run cleanup first, then use Edit mode for finishing touches.
