My firm uses Veryfi exclusively to capture receipts, bills, and checks.

It does an incredible job of capturing images and text, and then turning them into visual files you can post to QBO. Additionally, it can capture all the line items on a bill, capture new customers and vendors, assign accounts, record items as billable or reimbursable, note any association with a customer or project, and then upload directly to QBO - COMPLETE. You can even match the transaction to a bank transaction before uploading.

Would a tool like Dext be helpful to you? I'm not sure about handwritten text recognition, but I have had hand printed (not cursive) items successfully scan for recognition with prior versions of Dext. Also, I have a client who makes almost all their payments by check instead of ACH/Debit, and they enter and print their checks in QBO. You would then just need to match bank feed info that would have the check number, amount, and date cleared. I have another client whose handwritten checks have a carbon-copy page and another with a check stub. If they are written legibly, you may be able to scan them and use a text recognition tool, then cut and paste, instead of copying from the individual images online. Finally, I have one last client who has trained a voice recognition tool, Dragon Naturally Speaking, to be very effective in taking notes. I have considered using that for data entry. I may not be understanding your work flow or your need to view each check image, but I hope these ideas are helpful.
