Unable to Inactivate customers with completed projects

I am unable to inactivate old customers whose projects are completed. When I reached out to QBO I was told I would have to delete those projects to inactivate the customer. This is a non-negotiable workaround as we would no longer be able to look back at reporting for completed projects. For construction companies this lookback is an important part of future planning and possible repeat customers years later.
I am dealing with a customer list with several hundred old customers with completed projects. I simply want to remove them from the active list for efficiency. It is difficult to properly apply billable expenses to the proper customer/project when you have 15 customers with the last name "Jones" and only 2 of them are active.

Kathryn Mosher this is the whole reason I took us off of PROJECTS 5 years ago. I use Sub-Customers instead. It's the only way to manage closed projects that need to go inactive.
Additionally, most people at Intuit don't even have a clue that not only is this an issue but why it's an issue.
I was given the same advice as you. Delete the project; however, that means all the transactions fall under the customer profile instead of the project so you lose any history of that project.
It is the dumbest thing and I find it hard to believe that more ACCOUNTANTS don't see this issue prior to getting their clients on projects. Grrr
